Psalm 107 & 108: God’s Goodness

Verse of the Day: (107:8) Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

1.   God’s Goodness (107:1-37)
For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. (107:9)

Since the day that God established Israel, His chosen and great nation, the people of Israel had experienced and tasted His goodness and greatness, even when they turned away from Him, and rebelled against Him. (Genesis 12) However, God warned them never to take His goodness and grace for granted, as eventually He shall judge and punish them if they refused to repent their wickedness. God reminded Israel of the many times He saved and delivered them out of their distresses when they prayed and cried to Him. God also pointed to them the time when He miraculously led them through the wilderness, physically and spiritually fed and satisfied them, before leading them into the Promised Land. God then commanded them to offer sacrifices of thanksgiving declaring His wondrous works to the entire world so that they might know that the God of Israel is indeed the true and living God. Let us therefore thank God for His goodness and greatness that we are saved by His grace through our faith in Jesus Christ, and be worthy of His calling, so that His holy name shall be glorified in us. (2 Thessalonians 1:11-12)

2.   God’s Greatness (107:38-43)
He blesseth them also, so that they are multiplied greatly; and suffereth not their cattle to decrease. (107:38)

God is good to Israel all the time, as He greatly multiplied their population as well as their cattle to sustain and bless their lives, even when they disobeyed and rebelled against Him. However, God’s greatest and richest blessings are upon the righteous and wise who truly understand His lovingkindness. Let us therefore fully trust and obey God, so that His goodness, greatness and richest inheritance shall be upon us. (Ephesians 1:15-23)

3.   God’s Glory (108:1-13)
Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: and thy glory above all the earth; (108:5)

King David of Israel sang praises, and exalted and worshipped God, who is above the earth, and in the heavens, for all His goodness, greatness, glory, mercy, truth and holiness to Israel and all who truly believe in Him. Time and again, David realised that not only God delivered him from all his trouble, but He miraculously helped him to overcome all his enemies. Let us thus believe in and receive Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, as our personal Saviour and Lord, and give Him all the glory, honour and praise, as only He can save us from the devil’s hell by His precious blood, and only He can write our names on His book of life to be with Him in glorious heaven for all eternity. (Revelation 21:23-27)

Prayer of the Day:

Dearest God, thank You for Your goodness, greatness and glory as I trust in You.
